What fire & smoke work actually involves

Fire damage is almost never confined to what actually burned. Smoke travels through a structure along air paths, into wall cavities, through HVAC systems, and settles into anything porous — drywall, insulation, upholstery, clothing, wood. Soot residue is acidic, and left in place it continues to etch and corrode surfaces long after the fire is out.

There is also water to deal with. Firefighting saturates the structure, and if that water is not extracted and dried quickly you end up with a mold problem stacked on top of the fire damage. We address both together rather than treating them as sequential projects.

The work begins with securing the property, then moves through soot and residue removal, contents evaluation, odor treatment, and reconstruction. Odor is the part most commonly done badly by others — surface cleaning alone leaves particles embedded in materials, and the smell returns as soon as humidity rises.

Any one of these is worth a phone call. Several together usually means the problem is larger than it appears.

Visible charring or burn damage
Burned structural material must be assessed for integrity before any restoration begins.
Smoke odor that will not clear
Persistent smell means particles are still embedded in porous materials, not just on surfaces.
Soot film on walls or ceilings
Greasy black or gray residue is acidic and will continue etching surfaces until it is removed.
Discoloration of surfaces
Yellowing on walls, or tarnishing on metal and fixtures, is a chemical reaction to smoke residue.
Water from firefighting
Saturated materials need extraction and drying immediately, or mold follows the fire.
An unsecured structure
Broken windows, open roofs and compromised doors expose the property to weather and entry.

Openings are boarded and roofs tarped so weather, animals and unauthorized entry cannot add to the loss.

Firefighting water is removed and the structure dried, so mold does not develop on top of the fire damage.

Surfaces are cleaned using methods matched to the residue type and the material underneath.

Contents evaluation and cleaning
Belongings are sorted into salvageable and non-salvageable, inventoried, and cleaned where possible.
